Their Only One

Their Only One

A story about a child, young parents, and what love looks like in a hospital ward.

For Nisi and her husband, Aadishri is everything. Their only child. The centre of a quiet life built around a ration shop in Dibrugarh, Assam, and a family of five with grandparents, parents, and one little one who fills the house with life.

When four-year-old Aadishri was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, the questions that hit them weren’t just about survival. They were quieter, heavier. Would the income be enough? What would life even look like without their only one?

They came to our partner hospital in Guwahati in February 2024, young parents, far from home, scared and uncertain.

The early weeks were hard. Chemotherapy brought mouth sores, a loss of appetite, and a body that struggled to take in the food it needed. Aadishri’s nutritional status dropped to a malnourished state. When her condition got more serious, and she moved to the ICU, our nutritionist Hungshim stepped up her care. A feeding tube was placed, and nutrition support began, tube feeds first, then soft food, and gradually regular meals. Supplements, hot meals, and ration support all came together to help Aadishri through the toughest stretch.

Nisi’s husband kept the ration shop running from Dibrugarh. Nisi stayed close. She came to every session, asked every question, and followed every instruction. Their commitment never wavered.

And slowly, it worked. From moderate acute malnutrition to well-nourished. Phase by phase, the numbers improved and more importantly, so did Aadishri.

Today, Aadishri is in maintenance, coming in only for monthly reviews, growing steadily. The family, who once stood in a hospital ward wondering if they had the strength to get through this, now arrive with a calm confidence that only comes from having already fought and not given up.

Aadishri hasn’t started school yet. But there is already a dream. She wants to be a singer.

Nisi’s message to other families is simple and generous: “Don’t delay treatment. Come to the hospital. There is help here.”

They found it. And they are grateful every single day.
