When Jyoti brought her son Shaurya to hospital for cancer treatment, the hardest part wasn’t the diagnosis. It was the feeling of being entirely alone in a system she didn’t understand, with a sick child and no idea where to start. It was only when someone, a trained nutritionist from Cuddles Nutrition Team, sat down with her and explained what Shaurya needed to eat, what supplements would help, and how to manage at home between visits, that she felt, for the first time, truly guided.
That human presence, someone showing up with knowledge, care, and time, is something no amount of funding alone can fully replace. It is what volunteers, at their best, can provide.
Here are five real, meaningful ways volunteers can make a difference for children fighting cancer in India.
1. Fundraise With Something You Already Love
Volunteering for a child cancer NGO doesn’t have to mean showing up at a hospital. Some of the most impactful volunteers never set foot in a ward. Anaya and Aarav asked for donations instead of birthday presents and raised ₹75,000 to feed children fighting cancer. Nikita accepted donations in lieu of wedding gifts and raised ₹49,100. Manika, AJ, and Vishal ran the Mumbai Marathon and raised over ₹11,00,000 for the FoodHeals™ Program.
If you run, bake, paint, cycle, or sing, you already have what you need to fundraise. Cuddles Foundation’s Get Involved page makes it easy to start a campaign for any occasion.
Your birthday, your anniversary, your run.
Any of these can become a source of meals for a child who needs them.
2. Join the Young Heroes Programme
Volunteering isn’t just for adults. Nandini from London ran a marathon and raised over ₹12,00,000 for the FoodHeals™ Program. Shlokha ran bake sales that raised significant funds. These young people didn’t just raise money; they raised awareness, showed their peers that childhood cancer is real and close, and demonstrated that even small actions can have an outsized impact.
Cuddles Foundation’s Young Heroes programme is designed for students and young people who want to be part of the solution. It’s one of the most powerful things a school or college group can do, and it teaches the kind of empathy and civic responsibility that no classroom curriculum can fully replicate.
3. Be a Consistent Monthly Donor
Consistency is one of the most underrated forms of volunteering. Campaigns come and go. Emergency fundraising is reactive. What organisations like Cuddles Foundation need most is predictable, recurring support that allows them to plan nutritionist salaries, ration bundle procurement, and hospital partnerships months in advance.
Members of The Giving Table, Cuddles Foundation’s monthly giving community, commit to any amount they choose, transferred automatically each month. In a survey of 1,327 caregivers whose children benefited from the FoodHeals™Program, 95% reported improvement in their child’s weight and nutritional status. That consistency of outcome is only possible because of consistency of support.
4. Spread Awareness Accurately
One of the most valuable things a volunteer can do is help the people around them understand what childhood cancer in India actually looks like. Not the version from films. The real version: a child from a rural district who has travelled to a city hospital with a parent who has left their job, is sleeping in a corridor, and cannot afford the nutritious food their child needs to survive treatment.
Sharing accurate, story-led content from Cuddles Foundation’s blog and social media, the kind that centres real families like Jyoti and Shaurya, changes what people understand about the problem and what they feel compelled to do about it. “Without this program, my child would not have regained strength or weight so quickly,” one caregiver told us. Stories like this, shared widely, move people to act.
5. Pledge Your Professional Skills
Some of the most useful volunteers are those who bring their professional expertise. Communication, design, legal, finance, technology, research, logistics and offer it in service of an organisation working on a problem that matters.
For an organisation like Cuddles Foundation, volunteer professionals can help with everything from graphic design for campaign materials to pro-bono legal support, financial modelling, or content writing. It takes a community to help a child fight cancer. Every contribution of money, time, skill, or voice is part of that community. Find your way to get involved today.
