Patience and diligence keep Gulnaz afloat.
Story of how an underprivileged family from Mumbai dealt with cancer in the midst of the pandemic.
This is the story of Gulnaz, a 7-year-old girl from Nalla Sopara in Mumbai who was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) – a cancer of the lymphatic system. The lockdown in March had made the situation worse for Gulnaz, even though she had responded well to the treatment and had no extreme reactions to chemotherapy.
“It was very difficult for us to travel from Nalla Sopara to Nair hospital. We have three daughters and the only thing on our mind during this time was to protect them from COVID. All our savings were used in travelling to and fro the hospital safely. I am very thankful for the ration bundles we received from Cuddles Foundation that helped us provide food to our children during this time. Gulnaz was on steroids during her treatment which needed to be taken with milk. The milk powder provided by Cuddles helped both in her medication and also provided the much-needed nutrition,” says Gulnaz’s mother.
Neha, our Nutritionist at Nair Hospital, put Gulnaz on our Supplement, In-meal and Ration Program which helped her gain weight; she was moderately thin when she started treatment. Since March 2020, Gulnaz has received the benefit of nutritious food and counselling which has helped her recover slowly and steadily. “Gulnaz is not a stubborn child, and she hardly misses outside food which helped me keep her on the prescribed diet. And it has worked really well for her. It will take her three to four years before she is declared a cancer survivor, but I am very confident about Gulnaz’s recovery,” adds Neha who believes that patience can work wonders in spite of the hardship one has to undergo.
Thanks to your support, Gulnaz and her family have been able to face these tough times with diligence and patience. This would not have been possible without you.
